Hello and welcome back!
In this post you will find a good, easy and beautiful hiking trail in the Black Forest. The trail is along the lake Schluchsee and starts and ends in the town with the same name.
The accessibility to the trail is very good for everyone. It doesn’t matter if you go to Schluchsee by train or by car the trail begins from the train station and the parking lot. All the details about the exact location and coordinates can be found here. As usual, we downloaded the map on the phone but it was quite intuitive as well following the marks.
During this hiking I didn’t feel that I was hiking actually, it was more like a walk in the nature. On the official website stays that the trail has medium difficulty but actually is very easy, there are no hills to climb or valleys to go down. The path is almost flat in a very good condition and comfortable to walk and that’s why they call it a premium hiking trail.
The trail itself has 9 km and half of it is leading you along a lake and the other half is throughout the Black Forest. The first segment is consisted of crossing some streets until you arrive at the lake shore. Along the lake are actually two possibilities for walking: directly on the shore or a little bit further and higher is a path with a superb view over the frozen lake. Directly by the lake walking on ice and stones will be more appealing (at least it was for us). But try both just for different perspectives over the lake. We went walking on a Sunday so we had the feeling that everyone is outside.
I think that was actually the last weekend with real winter of the year 2021 and people wanted to take from it as much as possible. The temperature was -5 °C so the lake was still frozen, the snow was squeaking under the boots and the sun was shining. Children were having so much fun on the frozen lake sliding and throwing snow or pieces of ice on the lake.
To be honest I never had the chance to walk on a frozen lake of this size. Near my parents’ house was a small creek which was always frozen in winter and that was our playground during the cold season along with the hills but the feeling you have when you walk on a huge frozen lake is completely different. Try it! It’s worth it! If the ice is clear you can see the bubbles, the stones and the vegetation under. You will discover another world.
Along the lake are numerous benches and other sitting possibilities for a short break just to enjoy the lovely lake.
At the end of the lake the trail will take you to the second part which is the forest. You will be a little bit higher so the view over the lake starts to change.
We got hungry so in the forest we found a nice bench for a short break. The food that we always take with us for winter hikes consists of snacks because who want to freeze eating a feast?
The trail ends back at the lake so we could spend some more time sliding on ice after the walking. In total we needed 4 hours even if on the website they say you need 3 hours and a half we spend quite a lot of time by the lake at the beginning of the trail.
The lake Schuchsee from the Black Forest is a place to see in winter. I can say it really is a must if you are in the Black Forest during the cold season.
That was it for today. Get up, put a jacket and some boots on and go for a walk!
Lovingly,
Loredana
